Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card Review

Main advantages

These are the strengths of the Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® credit card.

One-time sign-up bonus worth up to 100,000 points

The Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® credit card offers a unique welcome offer. New cardholders will earn two airline reward certificates after spending at least $4,000 within three months of account opening. Each airline reward certificate is worth 50,000 Aeroplan points. You can use one certificate per flight, so you will need to be strategic when redeeming your certificate. These certificates do not expire as long as you remain a cardholder.

Elite Status Benefits for New Cardholders

You will automatically earn Aeroplan 25K Elite status as a new cardholder. This advantage is valid for the calendar year in which your account is opened and for the following calendar year.

If you are flying with Air Canada, the benefits offered with this status level can make your trip more enjoyable. Some of the most notable benefits include:

  • Priority seat selection, check-in and boarding
  • Two free checked bags
  • 20 eUpgrade Credits
  • 50% discount on preferred seats
  • Two single-use passes to the Maple Leaf Lounge

Earn up to 3 points per $1 across multiple spend categories

This card lets you earn rewards for spending across multiple spending categories, which can help you maximize your earning potential.

With the Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card, you can get:

  • 3 points per $1 on meals (includes takeout and delivery)
  • 3 points per $1 on grocery purchases
  • 3 points per $1 on purchases made directly from Air Canada
  • 1 point per $1 on other purchases

Earn 500 points for every $2,000 spent on purchases each month

The Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® credit card also offers a spending bonus. You can earn 500 bonus points for every $2,000 spent in a calendar month, capped at 1,500 bonus points each month.

First checked bag free

This credit card also includes benefits for checked baggage. As the primary cardholder, you and up to eight companions traveling on the same itinerary can bring a first checked bag free on Air Canada flights. Although the Elite status you’ll get as a new cardholder entitles you to two free checked bags, it’s a nice perk if you travel frequently with other people.

$100 statement credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS

Many travel credit cards now include statement credits for specific expedited travel programs. The Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® credit card is no exception.

With this card, you will get up to $100 in statement credit towards application fee reimbursement for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS. This benefit is available once every four years. You must use your Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® credit card to pay the application fee to use this benefit.

Benefits of travel protection

This travel card includes these helpful travel protection benefits:

  • Baggage delay insurance
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Travel delay reimbursement
  • Car Rental Collision Damage Waiver
  • Roadside assistance

Most travel credit cards at this price include similar perks, and you may find these perks useful if you run into trouble while traveling.

No foreign transaction fees

No foreign transaction fees are charged when using this credit card to make international purchases. Cards that have this fee charge around 3% for each foreign transaction. If you plan to use this card abroad, this benefit can save you money.

What could be improved

The Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card has a few minor issues to note.

Annual subscription

It should be noted that this rewards card has an annual fee of $95. Considering the card’s many benefits, it’s a reasonable annual fee, and the price is in line with other travel credit cards we’ve seen. But this is still an additional expense to think about.

The bonus offer comes in the form of Flight Reward Certificates

Many cards offer their bonus offer directly in points or miles, which provides more flexibility. With this method, you can use your welcome points as you see fit. The Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® credit card welcome offer doesn’t offer much flexibility. You will receive two flight reward certificates, each worth up to 50,000 Aeroplan points. You will need to use these certificates for the flights and cannot cash them in any other way.

Earning cap on spending bonus

You can get 500 bonus points on every $2,000 you spend each month with this card, but there’s an earning cap. You can only earn up to 1,500 bonus points per calendar month. If you typically put more than $6,000 a month on your cards, another card with no earnings cap might make sense.

Limitations on how you can redeem points

The Chase Aeroplan® World Elite Mastercard® credit card has limits on how you can redeem your points. Currently, you can redeem your points for Air Canada flights or flights with one of Air Canada’s many partner airlines.

Chase has announced that you will soon be able to redeem your points for other travel purchases through Chase’s Pay Yourself Back program at a rate of $0.0125 per point. But this exchange option is not yet available for this credit card.
